Transformative business printers launched by the new HP

HP invented the inkjet printer nearly 30 years ago. Over the decades, they’ve refined the technology and entered into the laser printer market.
Nowadays, HP has DeskJet and Envy printers for consumers, OfficeJet and LaserJet for businesses and a specialist range of wide-format printers called the DesignJet.
A transformative new range has just been added to this, called HP PageWide.
The prices of inkjet printers and the costs to run them have plummeted in recent years. The limitation for business users of inkjet printers has been the small cartridge sizes and the speed. With typical inkjet printers, the print heads have to run back and forth hundreds of times to produce an A4 printed page, thus limiting its speed and requiring a lot of moving parts.
On the other hand laser printers are great for speed but with so many moving parts and often expensive consumables like toner, fusers and transfer belts, they have been expensive to run - especially with colour prints.
HP’s new PageWide printers are a beautiful balance of both. It’s actually an inkjet printer range, but it has a bar of print heads which are wide enough to cover the whole A4 page, so don’t need to run back and forth. This means no moving parts apart from a few rollers and the paper running through them.
This allows PageWide to keep the fast speeds of laser printers but without the expensive consumables.
This technology is well proven with over 140 million pages printed in HP’s DesignJet printer range, but this is the first time it’s come down to business and corporate level products.
Over 40,000 individual droplets of ink can be squirted onto the paper instantaneously, meaning up to 75 pages per minute (depending upon the model) can be printed. The new technology is the same speed when printing colour or monochrome.
Also, the cartridges are much higher capacity than consumer grade inkjet while being much smaller than laser supplies.
With a three-year print head warranty, the ink will not smear, smudge or run and is fade and water resistant.
The PageWide range includes both printers and multi-function devices. Those with scanners built in now have double-sided scanning with speeds up to 75 pages per minute.
The range includes six models:
HP PageWide Enterprise Color 556 and MFP 586

• Small businesses and medium sized workgroups
• Monthly duty cycle of 15,000 pages a month
• Print speeds of up to 75 pages per minute

HP PageWide Pro 552dw and the MFP 577dw

• Small business and smaller workgroups
• Monthly duty cycle of 6,000 pages a month
• Print speeds of up to 70 pages per minute

HP PageWide Pro 452dw and the MFP 477dw

• Small businesses and small workgroups
• Monthly duty cycle of 4,500 pages a month
• Print speeds of up to 55 pages per minute

Like any inkjet printer, using the right paper is essential as the droplets have to be absorbed into the paper. You can still print great photos and awesome colours with an HP PageWide printer, but to get the most vibrant colours it’s advised to use higher quality paper without coatings.
This is unlike laser printers which are more versatile with the paper as they simply place a layer of ink over the top of the paper. Laser printers will also be better for organisations doing large volumes of monochrome printing, but for almost every other use or organisation the PageWide technology is the faster, cheaper option and will require less maintenance.
At this stage HP has no plans to bring the PageWide technology to consumers.

HP Releases Secure Printers

New HP LaserJets include built-in self-healing security features with protection down to the BIOS

BARCELONA, Sept. 22, 2015 — HP today announced three new enterprise class LaserJet printers that deliver increased protection against malicious attacks. The stronger security is part of a broader HP strategy to provide the deepest security across PCs and printers.

“Protecting against security breaches is one of the biggest challenges our customers face,” said Tuan Tran, vice president and general manager,LaserJet and Enterprise Solutions business, HP. “HP is helping customers secure their devices, documents and data by defending our enterprise printers with the strongest protection in the industry.”

Deepest protection in the industry
Printer security is a topic of growing importance. According to the Ponemon Institute, 64 percent of IT managers believe their printers are likely infected with malware. At the same time, 56 percent of enterprise companies ignore printers in their endpoint security strategy.⁽¹⁾To help address this gap, HP is delivering its new HP LaserJet Enterprise printers and multi-function printers (MFPs) with industry-leading security features⁽²⁾ built in, including:

• HP Sure Start enables detection of and self-healing recovery from malicious BIOS attacks, extending the same BIOS security protecting HP’s Elite line of PCs since 2013 to the new HP LaserJet Enterprise printers.
• Whitelisting ensures only known, good firmware can be loaded and executed on a printer.
• Run-time Intrusion Detection is a new feature providing in-device memory monitoring for malicious attacks. It was developed in partnership with Red Balloon Security, an embedded device security company started by researchers from Columbia University. The company has done extensive research for several government agencies, as well as private sector companies in industries such as telecommunications and controller systems. 

These new features will be standard on new HP LaserJet Enterprise printers and OfficeJet Enterprise X printers with HP PageWide Technology going forward. With a firmware update, these three features can also be enabled on several HP LaserJet Enterprise printers available since April. In addition, Whitelisting and Run-time Intrusion Detection can be added to many existing HP LaserJet Enterprise printers and OfficeJet Enterprise X printers launched since 2011 through an HP FutureSmart service pack update.⁽¹²⁾ FutureSmart is HP firmware that helps protect customers’ investments in HP Enterprise printers by enabling delivery of new capabilities via updates. 

Beyond the printer itself, HP also helps customers protect their print environment with solutions to manage security.⁽³⁾ HP JetAdvantage Security Manager, the industry’s only policy-based printer security compliance solution, lets IT establish and maintain security settings such as closing ports, disabling access protocols, auto-erasing files and more.⁽⁴⁾When a reboot occurs, the HP Instant-On Security feature  checks and resets any impacted settings automatically to bring devices into compliance with the organization’s policy. Earlier this fall, HP JetAdvantage Security Manager was updated for greater automation, including auto-discovery of devices to make it easier to find and add printers to manage.

HP will continue to focus on security for its printing portfolio by delivering market leading security technology for new and existing printers, helping customers better protect their devices, data and documents.

New printers feature fast, efficient printing
The new HP LaserJet Enterprise printers and MFPs deliver the fastest real world print performance in their class with the fastest first page out and dual-sided print speeds as well as the lowest total energy consumption per page.^(5,6) These printers were built for ease of use and include support for printing from mobile devices.^(9,10,11) Designed for workgroups of 5-15 users printing up to 7,500 pages per month, the printers benefit from the increased performance, protection and print capacity of new HP Original Toner cartridges with JetIntelligence. The new models include:

• The HP LaserJet Enterprise M506 series for monochrome printing with a 25 percent smaller footprint and dual-sided print speeds up to 71 percent faster than its predecessor.^(7,8)  
• The HP LaserJet Enterprise MFP M527 series, which offers monochrome printing in an MFP that includes single pass, two-sided scanning, an eight-inch color touchscreen control panel to support advanced workflow, and first page out speeds up to 33 percent faster than its predecessor.⁽⁸⁾
• The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP M577 series, delivers outstanding color printing in an MFP that includes single pass, two-sided scanning, an eight-inch color touchscreen control panel and optional keyboard to support advanced workflow, as well as dual-sided print speeds up to 43 percent faster than its predecessor. ⁽⁸⁾

The HP LaserJet Enterprise M506 series will be generally available on October 1 and the HP LaserJet Enterprise MFP M527 and HP Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP M577 series printers will be generally available on November 2.
